Why guppies are great freshwater fish to breed by Johnathan Thomas
When it comes to a good fish to start breeding for fun, it is hard to beat the fancy tailed guppy. There are many reasons why guppies make great fish to learn the ropes of fish breeding with. They are very prolific, start breeding at a very young age, breed on their own with very little help, and come in a never ending variety of colors to play around with. Because of these reasons, guppies are a fun species to breed before moving on to more difficult types of freshwater fish.
Guppies are prolific! There should be no doubt in anybody’s mind that guppies breed like it is going out of style. The number of offspring that one pair of this species of fish can have is unbelievable. Each female fish can have 30 or more fish every month or so. This starts from about the fourth month of age (or even earlier if your fish mature quickly) and continues until they are several years old. Just think about how fun it would be to raise 500 or more fish from one set of parents over two years and imagine how much practice you will get at raising healthy fish!
These fish can start breeding at a very young age. Guppy fry can be sexed when they are only a month old in most circumstances. Most top breeders separate the males from the females at this age to help prevent them from spawning before the top fish are selected to be the parents of the next generation. It is not entirely unexpected to find female fish being pregnant when they are only two months old. If you are just breeding for fun then you can probably get four generations of fish in every calendar year!
Guppies definitely do not need any help when it comes to spawning. Unlike other fish (bettas, for example) this species will breed all on its own as long as they are given plenty of room and a quality diet of flake food and some live fish foods. The only thing to consider is how you will keep the babies safe from the parents since they are known to eat the young fish after they are born.
Finally, guppies are available in a seemingly endless variety of colors and patterns. From red to yellow, from black to blue, the color options are all ready for you to experiment with. Many different tail types are available as well, but the delta tail is probably the best type to start out with (since pet stores like to sell this kind of guppy). So, why not start a guppy breeding program for fun!
