Cleaning Your Spa Filter Instead of Replacing It
Hot tubs and home spas are great, and many people have added them to their decks, gazebos, or even inside their homes so that they can relax and soak away the cares of life. It’s something that everyone in the family could have fun with. You won’t find it to be much fun changing the filter though. If you use the tub a lot, then you’ll need to be prepared to change the filter frequently. Fortunately for you, there’s a better way for you to go about things. Spa filters can be cleaned so that they can be used for longer periods of time. You’ll be keeping extra waste out of the landfill, but it will also help save you a lot of money.
The first thing you should do is cut power to the unit. It’s important not to work on anything that involves water and electricity. Remove the filter from under the skimmer. Removing the filter is one of the easiest things about it. If the filter in your tub doesn’t come out this easily, you may need to pull out the instruction book and learn how the procedure should be done.
You can use a soft scrub brush to remove larger pieces of debris from the filter. It can be very surprising how much debris that you find. Hair is usually the most common substance found in these filters. The seams of the filter need extra attention. Make sure that you don’t scrub too hard or you’ll risk causing damage to the filter.
You can wash the filter using a garden hose with a pressure nozzle attachment. Another option is a power washer on the lowest setting. To ensure that you’ve removed everything, you need to keep hosing the filter off until the water comes off clear. Place a broom stick through the hole in the center of the filter to help hold it in place while you wash it.
To ensure that it’s thoroughly clean, it’s best that you soak the filter in hot water and chlorine bleach. Not only will it help sanitize the filter, but it will also restore its white color.
After you’re done, you will need to rinse all of the bleach out of the filter. This is especially true if you use an alternative spa treatment such as Baquacil. It’s best to prevent any unwanted chemical reactions. At this point, then, the filter should be almost as clean and fresh as it was when it was new.
