Betta fish is one, if not the most sought after tank pets in different nations. Its bright colors, intricately shaped fins and interactive personality must have attracted aquatic life lovers of all ages. More than its interesting appearance there are must-know Betta fish facts that will surely fascinate and make a wannabe owner care for it properly.
Tracking back the hands of time, this type of fish was first spotted in Cambodia which was anciently known as Siam. This explains the origin of its other name Siamese Fighting Fish. Currently called Betta Fish or Betta Splendens, its glory as one of the most interesting pets has traveled towards the other continents of the world.
It is easy to spot one in a tank. They charmingly swim in their long flowing fins which are usually in various shades of blue, red, purple and white. Males appear in longer fins and more vibrant shade of their usual colors. Females wear stripes in their bodies and fins when healthy. When given proper Betta fish care, they are expected to grow up to two to three inches.
Part of the Betta fish facts that most owners find remarkable is the fish’s ability to develop its own personality. Both male and female display fascinating behaviors. To catch food, some jump out the water’s surface. Although males usually fight for territorial reasons, some could be very pacified for some caressing. A few of them can be trained to do charming stunts like hopping into rings. A piece of advice though, males shouldn’t be together to keep them from killing each other.

Generally, Betta fish tanks should include enough surface space. This provides your fish a perfect place to inhale air. They cannot breathe in the water so they stick out their heads from the water to breathe. Although they swim in water, they can drown in it.
The perfect tank for single fish is the one that can hold at least five to ten gallons of water. This is more than the fact that it finds joy in whirling through a wide space. Males, for one, need a clean and generous supply of water for building bubble nests for the coming of its babies. If you are keen to observe, you’ll notice a male Betta staying in one corner, gulping air and producing bubbles covered with his spit. This ensures him the bubble is sturdy until egg hatching.
Most owners share that the standard lifespan of these fish is two to three years only. However, some Betta fish facts show that under perfect conditions they can live for nine years. For this, the owner must provide regular amount of clean water for them to exercise in. If you bought yours from a pet shop, it has already lived a minimum of six months. Don’t fret as with proper care, it can live longer than that.
