Betta Care – An Overview
Betta fish are one of the most widely favoured pets in the world. The only problem with betta fish is that they take a lot of care and attention to make sure that they stay fit and healthy, but if you take the time to care for them, then you will be rewarded with an amazing pet.Many people are disuaded from buying a betta fish because of this. This is a shame, because betta fish are actually easy to care for if you know how. In fact, betta care is actually very straight forward and rewarding when done right.
Diet
You need to feed your betta just like any other pet you own. Most people don’t realise that you need to feed your betta the specific amount of food that is shown on the packet, because if too much is put in the tank, then it will grow bacteria and cause harm to your betta.
Betta fish can eat a number of different foods, and varying their diet will help improve their lifespan. Something I always do, is ensure that I have planned my betta’s diet at least two weeks in advance so I know what I need to buy to keep my betta happy!
Maintaining and Choosing a tank
The tank that you buy needs to be at least a 10 gallon tank. Do not put lots of extra things in the tank such as gravel or toy accessories, as this can lead to pollution of the water. Do not put your betta fish in the tank before the pump and filter has had a chance to go through one cycle. It is important to keep the tank temperature at 80 degrees Fahrenheit.
Should I Put My Betta’s Together?
Avoid co-habitating your betta fish. Betta fish are also known as Siamese Fighting Fish, and for good reason too! Putting two betas in a tank will cause them to fight, often to the death. Unfortunately, this is a fact of the betta fish’s existence and although it can be tempting, you must never put two betas in the same tank, otherwise chaos will ensue!
Breeding betta fish is the only excpetion to this rule. Always remove the female betta straight after breeding, because the male will try to kill her once they are finished! This is the main reason why betta fish breeding is so hard.
