Do You Want To Own A Betta Fish?

Siamese fighting fish are awesome pets. Some prospective betta fish owners worry about the amount of time and resources that need to be spent on caring for betta fish. Many people are disuaded from buying a betta fish because of this. This is a shame, because betta fish are actually easy to care for if you know how. Betta fish care is actually quite simple when you break it down into smaller sub-topics, such as diet, choosing the right tank, maintaining the tank and co-habitation.

What Your Betta Should Eat

You need to feed your betta just like any other pet you own. The only difference is, the amount you feed them needs to be exactly the right amount, otherwise your betta fish will be at great risk of dying, not from overeating, but from the bacteria that forms on the leftover food in the tank.

It is really important to vary your betta’s diet, to help ensure that they get all of the nutrition they need. I always try to feed my betta fish a combination of different betta pellets, which helps to vary their diet and also provide all of the necessary nutrition that they need to stay alive.

How to Maintain and Choose a Good Betta Tank

A ten gallon tank is the minnimum size tank that you need for your betta. Do not put lots of extra things in the tank such as gravel or toy accessories, as this can lead to pollution of the water. Ensure that the tank pump and filter go through at least one full cycle before you put your betta in, because it will get ammonia poisoning from the filter if you put it in straight away. Try to maintain the water temperature at around 80 degrees Fahrenheit.

Co-habitation

Do not put your betta fish together. Betta fish are reffered to as Siamese Fighting Fish for a reason! If you put two betta fish in the same tank, they will fight to the death. Don’t be tempted to try it, the results are nearly always fatal.

The only exception to this rule is if you are breeding betta fish. Caution must be taken when breeding betta fish, because once they have finished breeding, the male will try to kill the female betta! Often, this is the most difficult part of betta bredding, as it requires both patience and skill. You must be proficient at betta fish care before you begin to breed betta fish.
