What To Feed Your Betta

Feeding your betta fish regularly is an important step in making sure that your betta is healthy, just like many other pets. The only difference is, the amount you feed them needs to be exactly the right amount, otherwise your betta fish will be at great risk of dying, not from overeating, but from the bacteria that forms on the leftover food in the tank.

It is really important to vary your betta’s diet, to help ensure that they get all of the nutrition they need. I always try to feed my betta fish a combination of different betta pellets, which helps to vary their diet and also provide all of the necessary nutrition that they need to stay alive.

Make Sure That You Choose A Good Tank

The tank that you buy needs to be at least a 10 gallon tank. Do not put lots of extra things in the tank such as gravel or toy accessories, as this can lead to pollution of the water. Ensure that the tank pump and filter go through at least one full cycle before you put your betta in, because it will get ammonia poisoning from the filter if you put it in straight away. Try to maintain the water temperature at around 80 degrees Fahrenheit.

Sharing a Tank?

Do not put your betta fish together. Siamese Fighting Fish is a less common name for betta fish, but if you put two betta fish together, you will find out exactly where the name comes from! Two betas will fight to the death if you put them in the same tank. Unfortunately, this is a fact of the betta fish’s existence and although it can be tempting, you must never put two betas in the same tank, otherwise chaos will ensue!

The only exception to this rule is if you are breeding betta fish. Always remove the female betta straight after breeding, because the male will try to kill her once they are finished! Often, this is the most difficult part of betta bredding, as it requires both patience and skill. You must be proficient at betta care before you begin to breed betta fish.
