The 5 Best Tropical Fish for Your Child’s Aquarium
A fish aquarium is a great addition to any house. Fish can be very tranquil and appealing pets. Caring for fish is an enjoyable hobby for old and young alike. In most cases, aquatic pets require minimal care for the benefits that they add to your home. However, like other animals, some fish require more attention than others. Therefore, it is very important to conduct research and choose your breed selection carefully when setting up a tank. Some fish species are better suited for particular lifestyles. For example, certain particular tropical fish are easier for children to care for than others. When setting up a child’s aquarium, consider the following five fish.
Guppies
Guppies are always a good choice because they are very easy to care for and don’t require specialized diets. They also produce live young frequently which can up the level of excitement for most kids. They come in a variety of colors and are great in any community aquarium.
Swordtails
Like the guppies swordtails also produce live young and are very comfortable when sharing a tank with guppies. They are a bright orange color and are easily visible from a distance. With a community aquarium their larger size helps to add variety.
Mollies
Also good in a community aquariums Mollies live peacefully with other peaceful species like the two discussed above. They also bear live young and are usually black and white fish.
Platys
Bearing live young these fish are great to watch in an aquarium. Excellent in a community tank they will peacefully cohabit with guppies, swordtails and mollies. They are easy to care for and are generally rather healthy and hardy.
Small Barbs
Tiger barbs and Cherry barbs are also great for the beginning aquarist. Usually they are not ideal for a community aquarium that has other species of small fish since they tend to fin nip. If kept with other small barb species they are quite suitable. Children tend to be drawn to the way these fish swim in schools and they are available in a variety of colors. In large tanks they are very active and pleasing to watch.
It is a good idea to allow a child to own an aquarium on the proviso that you select the right fish for their tank. Making the proper selections will allow you to find fish that will not only survive the tank’s first cycle but will also be easy to care for. Children are naturally drawn to color and any aquarium is so much more enjoyable to watch when there is a nice variety of color. The important thing to remember is that you don’t want to saddle your child with a hobby they are not able to handle. Also, make sure they understand that fish are living creatures and need to be looked after properly.
